Marshall and his agent, Mario Tartak, flew to Queensland to put pen to paper after coach Wayne Bennett offered the former Kiwi international a surprise lifeline.

Marshall was keen to extend his NRL career, but there were fears it could be over after St George Illawarra chose not renew his contract. The 31 year old personally reached out to Bennett, who wrote the foreword to his biography, about his options. While he will face stiff opposition breaking into Brisbane's top 17 - Anthony Milford and Ben Hunt have established themselves in the halves - Marshall believes he can find his best form at Red Hill.

"Benji  was particularly excited this morning when we were flying up," Tartak said.

"He's looking forward to playing under Wayne Bennett at Brisbane, where he is confident he can get back to his best.

"Wayne's words were: 'you come here, train your butt off and if you perform you'll be in the team.'

"We've always said he's got two or three years left at him, but for now we'll take it one year at a time."

Marshall knocked back lucrative Super League offers, including those from Catalans and St Helens, to remain in the NRL. However, English audiences may witness Marshall's first game for the Broncos if he is part of Bennett's squad for the World Club Challenge.
