With the resuscitation of the Leichhardt Lions earlier this year in town, comes an unexpected but welcome bonus – the return of the Lions traditional Christmas cakes.
Leichhardt Lions president Lisa Dowler said that was one of the things the reformed club wanted to bring back when they started up again this year.
“A lot of people have told us they missed the cakes when they weren’t available,” Ms Dowler said.
“I’ve got a good supply of the cakes here at my shop on sale now – The 1.5kg cake in the red box costs $16 and the one kilogram cake in the green box costs just $12.”
Proceeds from the cake go to help various charities in the community.
“It’s a way of giving back to Mount Isa,” she said.
Ms Dowler said she was delighted the club had reformed and she was proud to be president.
“We are all proud to be part of the local community and helping out, that’s why a lot of us joined,” she said.
Ms Dowler said fundraisers the club had been involved with was helping the Hann family as mum Christine faces treatment for cancer in Brisbane and Kael Lovelock as he battles with LCH (Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis).
“As well as selling the cakes, we also host barbecues at Bunnings,” she said.

The Christmas Cakes are available at Isa Styles, Camooweal St which open
Ms Dowler said the Lions would be having a stall at events in the lead-up to Christmas where the cakes would also be available.
The Leichhardt Lions meet every second or third Thursday of the month at the Neighbourhood Centre on Marian St and new members are always welcome.
Among the projects they have on the go is Recycle for Sight Australia.
Ms Dowler said the program collected thousands of pairs of used spectacles, sunglasses and frames and then distributes regraded spectacles to needy people in many parts of the world.
