The aroma of Mexican food and drink, the sound of a Mariachi band and the vibrant colours gave patrons plenty to take in.

Organiser Carlos Espejel had been managing similar Mexican events for the past 10 years, but said they were mainly directed towards the Latin community.

"I thought we should share this culture and richness to Brisbane in general," Mr Espejel said.

So last year the Brisbane Mexican Festival launched and attracted about 13,000 visitors.

This year the festival is charging an entrance fee, but Mr Espejel said he expected a strong attendance between 5000 and 10,000 people.

About 50 vendors were on-site to give Brisbane a taste of Mexico with clothes, food, drink, local artwork and face painting on offer.

There was also professional Mexican wrestling, a Mariachi band, a Cuban band and German sausages with a Mexican twist.

Mr Espejel said he was surprised and thrilled by the way the Brisbane community had embraced the event.

"We were really surprised because on Facebook it was going crazy," he said.

"We had more than 23,000 people interested and there was just one event that was above us and that was Oktoberfest, which has been in the market for more than 10 years.

"So we were really happy with the response from people."

Next year, Mr Espejel said he plans to run the event over the entire weekend.

The Brisbane Mexican Festival operates until 9pm on Saturday.
