Rotarians and Young People Ahead united to assist local youth with resources and learning the skills of driving.

Rotary Mount Isa president, Tracy Pertovt, said Rotary felt with shift work in Mount Isa, there could be people unavailable to access time and resources for youth to get their hours up.

“We teamed up with Young People Ahead as they had the vehicle,” Ms Perovt said.

“Children then had to apply and we had a lot of applicants but we could only chose five. Ideally we were looking for children in the job market therefore having a licence would assist them.”

Stage one of the Driver Learning Program was held last week, where participants were briefed on road safety by District Crime prevention coordinator, Sergeant Cath Purcell.

“The local professional driving school offered five lessons for each participant at a discounted rate. Participants will now have three professional driving lessons with the driving school before Rotarians step in.”
