Fiona Murphy, 23, relocated to Australia from Ireland two weeks ago and is excited for the new journey she has just embarked on.
Studying at a university in Ireland, Ms Murphy completed a dual degree over five years, and has seeked her first full-time job in Mount Isa.
While studying, Ms Murphy connected with a non-government organisation in Tanzania and Nepal and conducted voluntary podiatry on three separate occasions. She said podiatry was a big part of her extra circular activities.
Upon graduation, Ms Murphy was searching a podiatry job website when she saw the advertisement for the full-time position in Mount Isa.
“I am not a big city girl. I come from a small part of Ireland so Mount Isa suited me perfectly,” Ms Murphy said.
“Everyone I had spoken to in Ireland about moving to Australia was like ‘Australia is so laid back and everyone is so nice’ and they were not wrong. Since I arrived in Australia and Mount Isa everyone has been very welcoming and including me in the community, so I am delighted about the move.
“When I was in Brisbane people were telling me Mount Isa was so different to any other part of Australia. But people make a place what it is and the people in Mount Isa really are great.”
Coming from a different country Ms Murphy said it was a bit daunting.
“It was hard at first not knowing anyone but everyone is lovely and including me in everything from a night at the Buffs Club to joining Cross Fit. I was amazed because there are so many people who haven’t grown up in Mount Isa who are still making an effort to include me in sport, travelling and fitting in.”
Under a two-year contract, Ms Murphy said she looked forward to meeting more people and venturing across the North West.
Advance Foot Clinic director, Angela Holland said she was excited for Mount Isa to have another full-time private podiatrist.
“It indicates things are good in Mount Isa and that Advance Foot Clinic is very invested in making sure they stay in the community.”
