Mount Isa Central State School takes great pride in providing exceptional training to all its staff to equip them with the skills and knowledge required to support all of its learners.
This year the school embarked on an action research project which focused on how it can support and accelerate student achievement in reading. This action research project linked closely to Mount Isa Central’s explicit improvement agenda where reading is the key focus.

The reading project has allowed the school to up-skill its leadership team, teachers, support staff and teacher aides who work in classrooms on a daily basis.
Being a small school Mount Isa Central are able to provide teachers with maximal teacher aide support.
In particular, the Prep classrooms are allocated full-time teacher aide support each day. Every class at Mount Isa Central State School has focused, small group guided reading sessions four times a week with a reading trained staff member. Since implementing these explicit guided reading sessions the school has seen significant improvement with students moving up to four levels in just five weeks.
To support this project the school has purchased a whole new range of high interest reading texts for all grades.
Student engagement has increased significantly as students come away from reading sessions feeling positive and confident in their own ability. Next year students will continue to focus on reading. However, staff will also direct focus to maths. Enrol with a school where staff are able to provide exceptional teaching to individual student needs.
