Fortunately, some decisions in recent times indicate this vital piece of infrastructure is slowly clawing back the neglect of successive governments. The important role that the rail line plays in the history books of the North West can’t be underestimated.
That’s why it was great to see Cloncurry Mayor Greg Campbell and his Council successfully lobby for Queensland Rail’s history-filled and iconic steam train to make its way into town for next year’s show. After deputations to Transport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe, it was announced that the steam loco will turn heads as a wonderful addition to Cloncurry’s celebrations as they mark the important 150-year milestone.
Rail has played a rich part in Cloncurry’s history, so it’s fitting it will play a pivotal role in enriching the town’s Q-150 celebrations. With Minister Hinchliffe in the North West last week, it was also an opportunity to highlight the benefits of rail transport, and how important it is for our region’s prosperity.
The $37.5 million investment to upgrade the rail system has also resulted in a much-needed economic stimulus for towns such as Julia Creek. Most importantly, these measures improve safety but will also allow for quicker access to get commodities from our resource-rich region to market. After spending the day with the Minister and the head of Queensland Rail Helen Gluer, it was timely to discuss getting more freight off the road and back on the rail.
Not only does this make running costs for our industry cheaper, but also safer for all other road users. The rail user charges are the biggest factor and need to be set at a level that will entice users - not force them on the road.
Ever since becoming the State Member, the rail line has been a focal point of discussion and the source of many complaints from community leaders along this critical piece of infrastructure. The line is of national significance and the level of investment should reflect its importance.
I will continue to work hard to ensure maintenance on the rail line is one of the Government’s priorities, making sure that it runs efficiently and productively, with maximised access and up-to-date technology to continually improve safety. The Government seem to find money for sports stadiums and new office towers in Brisbane, yet neglect wealth-producing assets such as the rail line.
