Sydney based member Samson Smith is eager to finally visit Mount Isa, which is going to host the last performance for the dancing group’s current Queensland tour.
He knows little of the place and expects to learn what bakery has the best pies in town by the time the show is held at the Mount Isa Civic Centre on Saturday night.
They focus on flips, tricks and fancy moves in this performance, and will fit in a sample of their new single ‘Top Dat Buckle’ which is anticipated for release in November.
It’s a new sound for them, with a ‘reggaton kind of feel’ which he describes as having a Spanish beat.
Earlier in the day the crew has a youth workshop.
“We teach them dance moves and hopefully they teach us something,” Smith said. “We always get inspired every time we do a workshop.”
There’s always at least one child in a workshop that “has it”, that bright spark, potential and motivation that sets them up as a performer.
Instruction is a lifestyle for Smith. Show tours could be regarded as weekend work while he fits dancing lessons and personal training in the rest of the week.
His advice for youth aspiring to perform is; “stick around positive people. Tick out the negative ones, you know the ones. They shut you down and don’t believe in you. Dream big.”
The crew became Australia’s Got Talent winners in 2010, catapulting their exposure, career, and signing on with Sony Music. The year before they had placed 13th in the World Hip Hop Dance Championships in Las Vegas, according to Smith (Wikipedia’s source says 14th but Smith’s recollection has more credibility).
“We came back to Australia and nobody talked. As soon as we got together again family and friends on board knew there was a good vibe in the group. (They) could see that, we couldn’t see that ourselves because we see ourselves every day.”
