The Kangaroos lost close to 2000 games of experience when they let go of veterans Brent Harvey, Drew Petrie, Michael Firrito, Nick Dal Santo, Daniel Wells and Farren Ray, along with a few other fringe players, at the end of the season.

But rather than be deflated by the loss of so many familiar faces, Ziebell is energised by the prospect of an influx of younger players into the senior team.

"A lot of guys haven't had their opportunity yet and I think a lot of guys next year will get their opportunity," Ziebell said at Arden Street on Friday.

"We know what young players can do when they get their opportunity – look at guys last year like Mason Wood and Benny Brown's come on in leaps and bounds, Majak [Daw] played really well towards the end of last year.

"Trent Dumont, Kayne Turner, Taylor Garner ... these guys we just want to get them fit, into our team and we know internally what they can do and it's about showing the football world that as well."

Ziebell, who is expected to succeed Andrew Swallow as North Melbourne captain, said he felt the burden of responsibility more acutely now that so many of his senior teammates have left.

"I've gone from [being] a young guy to an old guy in one year so it's a bit different," he said.

"Obviously we can't rely on our older guys anymore because they're not there, so we [players older than 25] are the senior players and we look forward to that responsibility and taking a hold of that and really driving the direction of the footy club.

"It's going to be exciting and we can't wait to get started."

Ziebell said he didn't expect to be named the new club captain but did say he aspired to fill the role.

The former top-10 draft pick said it was sad farewelling so many North Melbourne champions this off-season but he backed the tough decisions that coach Brad Scott made.

The timing of the announcement that Harvey, Petrie, Firrito and Dal Santo wouldn't be offered new contracts, in particular, raised eyebrows.

It occurred with at least two games, including at least one final, left in North Melbourne's season but Ziebell denied it impacted the team's final two performances of the year – a 37-point loss to GWS and a 62-point loss to Adelaide.

"I don't think it had a major impact," he said.

"Obviously the day it occurred and a couple of days after it was a little flat around the club but we understood that we had a finals series to play for and if players can't get up for finals then I don't know what they're going to get up for."

Ziebell was speaking at the unveiling of the club's new logo.

"I like it. It's obviously very different from our last one, but I think it represents our club really well and it's going to serve us well going into the future which is great," he said.
