The IsaRATS sign on day was held at the Buffs Club on Sunday afternoon.
Club president Craig Nicholson said the attendance was excellent as was the response from junior members.
“Without juniors in the club you don’t have a club,” he said.
The club focuses on training through the Christmas season before the racing begins next year.
First there is the monthly training triathlons, then the corporate triathlon in February, and then the Race to the Creek Series that leads up to the Julia Creek Dirt N Dust.
Nicholson believed triathlon had a presence in Mount Isa because it offered a variety of exercises and because the equipment required was simple to get.
“Running shoes, a basic road bike, and a hat and goggles and you’re off,” Nicholson said.
The club had two trainers, including Greg Mitchell who focused on running. He is joined by Matt Kelly, who moved from Townsville for work reasons and was able to share his triathlete experience to the group.
Nicholson said he has competed in triathlons for about three years, competitively, after his wife started. Since then the sport has become a lifestyle for the shift worker.
He was exercising, meeting new people and focused more on healthy eating.
