Australia vs South Africa: Steve Smith says Australia lacked fight, quality and pride

Australia's cricketers lack pride in the Baggy Green, said Steve Smith, his face half-hidden beneath his sponsor's cap. Smith's, of all the Australian heads, had stayed screwed on throughout a calamitous defeat and could have worn the cap with pride. His head is one that does not deserve to roll. But his choice of headwear was a sign of the divergent priorities within Australian cricket, ruddy-cheeked with financial health while the national team is suffering from a wasting disease. It is quite possible that one of the captain's KPIs is not to win matches but to put the sponsors first.
