Queensland had the largest decrease in the country in October, in seasonally adjusted terms, while Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia had increases in employment.

But in good news, there was a decrease in the unemployment rate in Queensland - down from 6.2 per cent in September to 5.8 per cent in October, seasonally adjusted.

In trend estimates, Queensland employment was down 5400 with the trend unemployment rate decreasing by 0.1 percentage point.

Acting Premier Jackie Trad said the participation rate "has always been an issue", which was why the government was focusing on employment programs such as Skilling Queenslanders for Work.

"We know we can actually increase participation," Ms Trad said.

"We know that participation is a problem, that's why we're spending money on dedicated programs to get young people, and long term unemployment people, back to work."

Ms Trad said it was important pay close attention to the unemployment rate in regional Queensland.

"We know in south-east Queensland there is lots of economic activity happening and we need to make sure that is spread right across our state," she said.

Last month's figures showed the unemployment rate dipping from two percentage points.

Shadow Treasurer Scott Emerson said the figures showed Queensland was falling behind other states when it came to job creation and job security.

"As people give up looking for work they are no longer reflected in the unemployment figures and this is what's driving a drop in Queensland's unemployment rate on both measures (trend and seasonally adjusted)," Mr Emerson said.

"Anyone who sees today's result as good news clearly doesn't understand how tough it is to find a job in Queensland."
