Diagnosed April 26, Hannah Larsen had no symptoms of Leukemia at all. She was never sick, no temperatures, no sluggishness, and completed a 8.5km run around the oval with her dad the week before being diagnosed.
With constipation and major pain, Hannah was taken to Townsville emergency but was sent away with tablets. Hannah had not recovered the following day and was taken to see a doctor. The doctor said her condition was not normal and he urged the family to go back to the hospital and demand bloods.
After three tests, put into isolation and a blood and platelet transfusion, Hannah was sent to Brisbane where she remains going through chemotherapy.
Both of Hannah’s parents resigned from their jobs to help take care of their little girl. Now the Mount Isa community has come together to help ease the financial burden on the family.
A Metafit seminar and children’s bootcamp will be held at Saint Joseph’s Catholic School hall in support of Hannah Larsen.
Co-organiser, Vicki Nicholson, said there was plenty of interest in the fundraising event, with over 110 people having rsvp on Facebook.
“Metafit is designed to boost your fitness, rocket your energy levels and get massive results in the shortest amount of time possible,” Ms Nicholson said.
“Other local trainers have also jumped on board to diversify the fitness seminar.
“Although we had interest on our Facebook event, we have only 26 people registered online. We will take registrations on the day but felt it would be easier for people to complete the paper work before starting.”
Ms Nicholson said when she heard of Hannah and her family’s story it gave her goosebumps and she wanted to get involved straight away.
“When you have a sick child and no primary income, I could only imagine the pressure and how the family would be feeling,” she said.
“A Go Fund Me page was set up when Hannah was diagnosed and has already raised an amazing $34,000. If anyone cannot make the Metafit session they can go to the website to donate.”
The Metafit session will be $5 per person and go for about an hour including warm up and cool down. It will start at 8am, with children’s bootcamp starting 15 minutes prior. The theme of the day is purple and flamingos.
Ms Nicholson thanked local businesses who had jumped on board and supported Hannah and her family.
