Jeffries' 24-year-old brother Sam plays rugby union for the Melbourne Rebels and Tom was also offered a Super Rugby contract.
Not short on opportunities, Princeton University in the US also offered him rowing scholarship, but in the end Jeffries decided to give AFL a try at North Melbourne.
The club released a statement on Wednesday saying they were taking the 17-year-old on as a project player.
Currently Brisbane-based and standing at 202 centimetres tall, they aim to turn Jeffries into a ruckman.
The club said he would play with their VFL side Werribee for a season before officially joining the Roos.
General manager of football Cameron Joyce said Jeffries would be able to develop at a VFL level while taking part in all AFL training.
"Tom is an outstanding athlete and we are delighted to welcome him to the club," he said.
