Why is rugby league at war: ARLC boss John Grant and NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg backflipped on a Memorandum of Understanding over future funding from 2018 onwards on Wednesday.

What was the reason: Grant and Greenberg stressed the game needed to divert money into other areas and would not be able to commit to the pledge for grants to be 130 per cent of the yet-to-be-determined salary cap after CBA negotiations are finalised.
What are the effects: Agitated club bosses have formally notified their intention to remove Grant as one of the eight independent directors on the ARLC and will be forced to rip up budgets while the player market remains stagnant as players and managers await the salary cap level for 2018.
How can John Grant be removed: If 14 of the 26 members – made up of the 16 NRL clubs, NSWRL, QRL and eight commissioners – pass a simple majority at a general meeting; or under a special clause where 10 members plus both the NSWRL and QRL vote to pass a resolution.
Can the constitution be changed: If 15 of the 16 clubs plus the NSWRL and the QRL form a specific majority, change can be made to the constitution, which could include granting clubs or state associations a representative on the commission.
What happens next: Australian Olympic Committee boss John Coates has been asked to undertake a constitutional review while Grant will seek to appease club bosses in a further meeting next week.
