Petrie, who turned 34 in October, will reunite with former North Melbourne teammate Adam Simpson and give the Eagles immediate support in the forward line and ruck.

He is expected to play as a nominated rookie, meaning he will be upgraded to the senior list for the start of the season. Nic Naitanui will miss most, if not all, of next year after a knee reconstruction, while Scott Lycett is also facing a delayed start after knee surgery.

"He comes in to fill a specific need for us," West Coast's head of football Craig Vozzo told the club website. "We spoke prior to the trade period about Nic's injury and Scott's injury that we needed to be creative in our mindset and our strategy going into trade and drafting ... Drew gives us another player who is a forward-ruck and that gives the match committee plenty of options."

Petrie was one of six delisted players to find a new home in Monday's draft, which could be the final rookie draft should the AFL do away with rookie lists before the 2018 season.

Carlton gave former Fremantle defender Alex Silvagni – the second cousin of list manager Stephen – another chance after he was delisted by the Dockers last month.

Greater Western Sydney drafted Tendai Mzungu, who will reunite with former teammate Matt de Boer at the Giants. De Boer was chosen in last week's national draft, with both players brought in to provide depth.

Brisbane Lions drafted delisted Giants midfielder Jake Barrett, while Collingwood's ongoing search for key defensive depth led them to former Gold Coast player Henry Schade.

Former Essendon and GWS forward Shaun Edwards will play on at a third club, after being chosen by Sydney.

In other news, clubs made ruckmen a priority after largely overlooking them in the national draft.

Twelve rucks were drafted in all, including Petrie and redrafted trio Shaun McKernan (Essendon), Jack Fitzpatrick (Hawthorn) and Keegan Brooksby (Gold Coast). Essendon used the No. 1 pick on a teenage ruck prospect, Sam Draper, who has been playing football for less than nine months. Draper – a 203-centimetre, 105-kilogram prospect – played soccer as a centre-back before being invited to play for South Adelaide earlier this year.

Ben Jarman finally made his way to Adelaide, joining the club as a pre-listed father-son rookie after all clubs opted out of the pre-season draft for the second year in a row.

Sam Simpson, the son of 114-game player Sean, was selected by Geelong under the same rule.

Jarman is the first father-son player in 26 years to make it to the Crows, who his father Darren helped steer to back-to-back premierships in 1997-98. Ben's cousin Jackson Edwards – the son of Tyson – will be an option for Adelaide at the end of next year.

"It's pretty special with Dad playing at the club and both my uncles. There's a bit of history here," said Jarman after the draft. "It was a long process, but I'm very excited now to get an opportunity on an AFL list. I'm really looking forward to getting started."

The AFL's Next Generation academies also spawned some draftees, with clubs able to list players as category B rookies once they were overlooked by all other teams.

Port Adelaide listed Ugandan-born Emmanuel Irra, while West Coast drafted Sudanese born midfielder Tarir Bayok, who played for the West Australian under-18 team this year.

Retired pair Sam Shaw and Joel Patfull were redrafted to Adelaide and GWS for salary cap reasons and, in Shaw's case, welfare support after his repeated concussions.
