Under World Rugby regulations, clubs are able to get their players back for this weekend, given it falls outside the Test window that comprised the Wallabies' matches against Scotland, France and Ireland.

Genia missed Australia's first game of the spring tour against Wales in Cardiff but returned as soon as his club had to release him.

While Cheika still has hopes of keeping Genia within the Wallabies set-up, he said the news wasn't looking good when he fronted a press conference on Monday morning in Wembley.

"Right now, from the conversations we've had with Paris, they're not releasing him," Cheika said. "We'll have another crack and see what we can do, but it seems unlikely that the French... they obviously place more importance on their game for Will than our international. That's the way the rules are, so we'll just have to deal with it."

There was a degree of goodwill from Cheika and the Wallabies, who happily released Genia from playing the third Bledisloe Cup match in Auckland.

Although that game also fell outside the Test window, the Wallabies were hoping that by giving up Genia then his club might consider allowing him the chance to play at Twickenham on Saturday.

Asked whether having a grand slam on the table would have changed how much they fought for Genia, Cheika said: "No, not at all. We didn't ask until [Sunday] night. We asked after the game and that was the response they came back with."
