The 26-year-old has spent most of his adult life playing continous baseball seasons around the world but a serious knee injury earlier in the year forced him to stay at home for the Northern Hemisphere's summer.

During that time Kandilas established Professional Baseball Services to coach kids around his home in the Cronulla Sutherland Shire.

He said the time to reflect helped him refresh his mind and body before he prepares to establish himself in the highly regarded AA Minor League in United States.

"People say that when you start coaching it helps your own game and it's definitely true," Kandilas said.

"You become really conscious of the little things that have to be done, whether it's the mechanics of a swing or throwing, little things you forget about when you're playing every day."

"It's given myself an open perspective of what we need to stay on top of when we go out to play."

And since his move to Canberra from the Sydney Blue Sox it is showing.

Kandilas has scored seven runs in his eight games so far this season, regularly getting off base and being described by coach Michael Collins as simply "awesome".

He is a genuine journeyman of international baseball – played for five teams in the Minor Leagues and one in Japan – and is preparing to solidify his position back in the Australian team.

And during his travels he says the dramatic improvement to the Australian Baseball League has increased the prospects of local players hoping to crack it in professional leagues overseas.

"The Australian players can really focus on their game in the off season and keep working on different aspects they need to improve on," Kandilas said.

"That definitely shows because every season I went back the following year at Spring training (in the US) I was in shape and ready to go and able to compete for a spot on the next team's roster."

Following the Cavalry's winning series with Sydney last weekend where the two scored more runs in a single game in ABL history, Canberra will now turn their attention to the Adelaide Bite at the Ballpark.
