Cavaliers won the toss and elected to bat against Blackstars on Saturday. Cavs were in early trouble at 3 for 14 before Shane McCarthy (49) and Sam Peters (82) combined for a 100 run partnership to steady the ship.
At 4/114 at the half way mark Cavaliers looked set for a target in excess of 200.
However the Blackstars attack regularly took wickets to apply the pressure.
Top scorer Peters was eventually the last batsmen out as he attempted to salvage a respectable total, Cavaliers eventually finishing all out for 173 in the 34th over.
Best bowler for Blackstars was the economical Jamie Stewart with 2/26 of 8 overs, Cameron Conlon took 3/41.
Cavaliers took the field searching for early wickets.
Opener Alistair Baker rode his luck to 33 edging several catches just wide of the fielders. An opening stand of 114 between Baker and top scorer Andrew Cullis (103 not out) set Blackstars well on the way to victory.
Cullis hit a superb century pouncing on any delivery that was just short of a good length. Some late hitting from Trent Cameron (21) saw Blackstars reach the total with 13 overs to spare.
The Cavaliers bowlers were unlucky at times.
Skipper Jason Naylor tried 10 different bowlers searching for breakthroughs.
AJ Saunders was the pick of the bowlers with 2/21 while Jason Wellington chimed in with the other wicket.
Blackstars will be happy with their winning start to the season with a much younger line up this season, while Cavaliers will hope the form shown by youngster Sam Peters will lead to some victories once key personnel return to their side.
The Panthers won the toss against Challengers on Sunday and batted first to avoid fielding on a typically sweltering Isa summer’s day.
The Challengers started well to leave the Panthers at 3/65 after 14 overs, leaving the door ajar for a Panthers collapse they've become famous for. Chazz Eichmann realised the gravity of the situation and refused to play a shot for a session and a half, seemingly erecting a wall between himself and the Challengers attack. Chazz and skip Dan Tucker compiled 72 for the fourth wicket, before Tucker fell for 36. Eichmann anchored the innings until dismissed for 50. Steven Andrews bludgeoned the Challengers attack with some high-quality low order hitting to finish with 50 from 22 balls. The Panthers were dismissed for a competitive 235 in the 40th over. Naren was the pick of the bowlers, with 4/28 from his 8 overs, while Melwin Jerome spun the ball sideways and sometimes not at all to pick up two wickets.
In reply the Challengers started well, with Sandeep Meka monstering some medium paced opening bowling from Luke Graefe over the railway lines. From there however, it was a constant flow of wickets for the Panthers, with everybody involved. Naren and Pradip were the pick of the Challengers batsmen with 13 and 16 respectively. M. Bearchley picked up two wickets with sharp turning offies, Graefe added to his wicket tally with another two courtesy of some floaters. Steve Andrews was the pick of the bowlers with four poles thanks to some straight arms to top off a strong all round game.
The cricket sixes are on this weekend.
