There was a bit of irony as English jockey James Doyle booted Trekking home for his first Australian winner at Rosehill on Saturday.

The two-year-old on debut was simply too good for his rivals, but it was the two-year-old race from the first Saturday in December last year that is the reason Doyle was in Sydney.

That day James McDonald won on Astern, a race from which he now faces a charge of having an interest in a bet on the horse that day. He is stood down, so Godolphin have brought the retained Doyle to Australia this week.

"It's nice to get one on the board, I'm looking forward to my stint here and hopefully I can be successful and can give it my best shot," Doyle said.

"It's the ultimate challenge for a jockey, plenty of guys have come down and found it pretty tough, like Frankie [Dettori] and people like that."

Doyle did the right thing on Trekking as he tracked the leader and then pushed out inside the 300m before sprinting away to win by 1-1/2 lengths from Goodfella and stablemate Gaulois.

"If the boys thought they were going to put it over him when he got here they might have a different approach going forward," trainer John O'Shea said. "That was a very good ride from a world-class jockey."

Trekking had been a handful around the stable but his potential was clear to Godolphin however O'Shea made it clear the Street Cry colt was on notice.

"He was running for his manhood because he is a bit of lad," O'Shea said. "He has ability and now will go for a break and there are better things to come from him in the autumn. There is much more in store from him."

Doyle was left impressed by Trekking's turn of foot.

"I had plenty of horse [at the 300m] and he quickened up through the gap nicely," Doyle said.

"He wandered about after we got to the front, but I gave him a couple of taps and he knuckled down well."

Doyle made it a double on Malice in the ATC Cup with another brilliantly judged ride and opened the chance of him going to the Villiers Stakes.

"We always thought the 2000m back to the mile would suit him. He liked the speed on there and did the job," O'Shea said.
