Several readers of the North West Star have said it is a Pacific National train and we have asked Pacific National to confirm.

Queensland Rail confirmed that two wagons of a zinc concentrate mineral freight train derailed at low speed at Quarrels, east of Julia Creek. 

“There were no injuries as a result of the incident, and the cause is being fully investigated,” a Queensland Rail spokesman said. 

“The wagons remained upright and there was no spillage of the mineral product.

“Queensland Rail infrastructure and investigation staff have arrived at the derailment site this morning and are now assembling materials to restore the track.

“All rail traffic has been suspended in both directions.” 

The 1240hrs Inlander due out of Townsville has been cancelled and alternative transport has been arranged for the 23 affected passengers.

A QR spokesperson would not be drawn on who the operator was.

ORIGINAL STORY (3.30pm) 

A TRAIN has derailed five kilometres east of Julia Creek, according to McKinlay Shire’s chief executive Peter Fitchat. 

He said the train was travelling east bound when it hopped off the track on Wednesday morning. 

“The train did not tip over but 500 metre of track is damaged," Mr Fitchat said. 

“Queensland Rail staff on their way to investigate, not serious. 

“Nobody injured.” 

The McKinlay Shire Council waits for the full report, he said. 

A Queensland Rail spokesman confirmed the derailment happened and was preparing a statement.
