The ‘1 Million Stars to End Violence’ project was launched in 2012 as a response to the increasing occurrence of racial and domestic violence and violence against women in Australia. Since its inception, the initiative has grown into an international weaving movement, with a short term goal to produce 1 million stars to be displayed as an installation at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Chief Operating Officer, Kevin Gill, said contributing at a local level to the broader star weaving initiative was a great way for the staff and wider community to open a dialogue on domestic violence.
“As the gateway to the outback, it is important that we take the time to raise awareness for issues that affect people living in our regional communities,” Mr Gill said.
“It’s great to see staff engaging in this initiative. Nearly every tenant in the airport is participating including Mount Isa Airport, Airside Logistics, Spotless, ISS security, and Aerocare.”
Zonta Club of Mount Isa President, Kate Glover, said that the club committed to weaving 10,000 stars before July 2017 to localise the global fight against domestic violence.
“A ‘Star Weave Community’ is a group of people in a town, suburb or organisation who commit to weaving 10,000 stars by July 2017 – and this is precisely what we are striving to do,” Ms Glover said.
“We are very grateful for the support of the Mount Isa Airport and airport stakeholders who have taken part in the initiative. Through weaving stars, with others or by ourselves, we keep the conversation of dealing with violence in our communities alive and active.”
“We have also been fortunate enough to have been successful in seeking funding from Mount Isa Airport’s Community Benefit Fund. The funds will go toward new bed linen to be distributed to the local women’s shelters,” said Ms Glover.
Mr Gill said Mount Isa Airport was proud to be supporting the local Zonta Club in more ways than one.
“We launched our Community Benefit Fund this year for the first time. As a result we are supporting a number of great initiatives in the community – one of which is the Zonta Club of Mount Isa,” Mr Gill said.
