The Gecko Outdoor Sports coordinator was third among the women competitors in the Alpine Challenge held November 26-28.
The challenge organisers consider it to be “without doubt, the toughest, most challenging, most spectacular and rewarding mountain trail run in Australia, if not the southern hemisphere.”
Whitehead said one of the mountains she climbed was Mt Bogong, the highest in Victoria.
Whitehead aimed to compete in the 100 mile event last year but cancelled due to a stress fracture in the ankle. After returning to training she rolled her ankle.
“Five months out of this race I thought ‘do I have enough time (to train) and I thought ‘bugger it, I’ll give it a go.’”
Others tranferred to the 100 km distance in the race. Whitehead decided to stick with the original distance. “I wasn’t there to do 100 km, I’ve done that before.”
