The present agreement allows one game each round to be played live but it also means the clubs not being televised are restricted from live-streaming their games through the internet.

When the deal was brokered in 2015 it was an important milestone for football and for women's sport in general – netball's ANZ Championship was one of the only other domestic leagues to be televised.

But the upcoming women's Big Bash League will have selected games broadcast on television and the rest streamed through Cricket Australia's website, while the AFL Women's will broadcast all matches on Channel 7 and Fox Footy.

Even the WNBL, which doesn't have a broadcast deal, occasionally has greater reach with fans because it is free to show games live on YouTube.

The restriction to the W-League's streaming rights makes it difficult for fans to engage with the league.

It is particularly relevant for fans of Canberra United because the side will not play in the capital until January 7.

Coach Rae Dower said the international nature of football has allowed the club to reach supporters around the world and in the home countries of their import players.

The broadcast agreement allows ESPN to show games in the United States but again this is restricted to just one game a week and cuts out the ability to live-stream.

"We've got a very big fan base across the globe but particularly in the US where a lot of our players go and toil away in the off-season so it's certainly something that's been discussed," Dower said.

The families of interstate players such as Jenna McCormick also miss out.

"My family always wants to watch me every week and it's a little bit of a bummer when they can't and they have to either watch the game after it's been played or not watch it all," McCormick said.

"It would be a great investment for the W-League to stream online," she said. "It makes sense and I think it's the right move and hopefully next year ... they'll implement that change."

Advanced rights around each clubs' access to live-stream games will form part of the negotiations for the next broadcast deal.

Canberra United head to Victoria this weekend to take on undefeated Melbourne City and McCormick is confident they will come away with a result.

"We know we can do it, we know we can beat them and we want to be the first team that gets some points off them and beat them," she said.

"It'll be a matter of who is the better team on the day and I think it will be us."
