Since June, the Resound Voices of Experience group, whose members have lived through domestic violence, have used their insights to help inform law makers and government.

The group, organised through Micah Projects' Brisbane Domestic Violence Service, ran training sessions and have been involved in about 10 consultations with government and NGOs to help improve responses.

Their work has included consultations with the Department of Justice and Attorney-General and courts, along with input on domestic violence legislation.

Passionate about turning their negative experiences into something positive, the women, who volunteered their time, have used the phrase "turning darkness into light" to express the process of sharing difficult memories.

One of the participants, who asked to be referred to as Jo M, was in a domestic violence situation for about five years, enduring financial, physical, emotional and verbal abuse, before walking away last year.

Jo had a successful career and said, like many women who lived through family violence, she did not realise she was in a domestic violence situation.

"I thought it was not something that happened to someone like me," she said.

"I saw things on the media about women being killed and maimed and I thought - that's not happening to me.

"After I left, I suddenly realised it was an absolutely textbook case."

Jo said her former partner's aggression had been escalating when, last year, he threatened to hurt her while she was holding her son.

"He had a knife and he slammed it so hard down, he hurt himself. He went to hospital and I rang my friend to tell her what happened," she said.

"Enough was enough and I called the police. That was the moment that I could no longer live in that household, for my little boy."

Jo said the media often portrayed women being killed or maimed, but many women did not realise that a shove, punch, name calling or withholding money could all be forms of domestic violence.

"Your life doesn't have to be at risk for you to be subject to domestic violence," she said.

"I think people have a very skewed idea of the kind of people who are affected by domestic violence.

"People think it's people who don't have money or education, or a drug habit, or a bad parent.

"The women I've encountered are none of those things.

"They're not stupid. They're not victims... They're just people who fell in love with the wrong person, which is what I did."

Jo said being part of the group helped her move forward by giving back.

"For me and the women in the group, we all feel very passionate about this and we feel that our experiences haven't gone to waste if we use them in a way that informs key organisations... to support women," she said.

Another woman, who wanted to go by the moniker of Emily, left her partner of five years earlier this year, after she said she endured escalating psychological and emotional abuse, gaslighting and repeated instances of anal rape.

"It started off all wonderful and fantastic and things started to happen," she said.

One night when she did not want to have sex, her partner anally raped her.

Emily said she was going to leave but discovered she was pregnant.

"It got worse through pregnancy," she said.

Due to a medical condition, Emily said she was told not to have sex, but said her partner anally raped her through her pregnancy as well.

"At the end of it, I was beat down and being controlled," she said.

Emily tried a few times to leave, but left earlier in 2016 when her young daughter started to get older and she worried "(her daughter) was getting to an age where it was having an impact, and I thought I need to get out of here".

Emily then needed to wrangle with courts, domestic violence orders, lawyers and mediation.

Emily said telling her story to others was hard at first because she did not tell anyone during the relationship.

"The day I left was when I told mum and the rest of my family and my best friends. I'd been silent for so long but it was such a relief getting it out there," she said.

Emily is now studying law and wants to become a politician so she can drive change.

"Because I'm not going to sit back and watch people's lives be destroyed," she said.

Emily said the women in the group helped each other keep going.

"And even knowing people have been through the same experience, it's oddly helpful, you're not alone, which is sad in itself, but it's hard to explain," she said.

The Resound Voices of Experience group is due to officially launch on Friday night, with guest speaker Australia's National Research Organisation for Women's Safety chief executive officer Heather Nancarrow.

Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Minister Shannon Fentiman said Micah Projects and the Brisbane Domestic Violence Service were significant partners with the Queensland government in delivering services to people escaping violence.

"This is another great example of the fantastic work they are doing in the community and I'm 100 per cent behind them," Ms Fentiman said.

"It's wonderful that they're supporting brave women to tell their stories and contribute to a better system for others.

"I've met some of these women, and I look forward to hearing much more from them."
