Mayor Joyce McCulloch said partnering with Dial Before You Dig gained council more asset protection as well as providing an essential service for developers and contractors.
Dial Before You Dig is a free national service which aims to prevent damage to underground infrastructure and disruption to services, as well as improving public safety. It acts as a single point of contact for the public to receive information about underground networks. The service provides access to the public about the location of their underground pipe and cable networks. It is available to everyone from homeowners to landscaping.
Dial Before You Dig North Queensland Regional Manager Terry O’Keeffe welcomed Mount Isa City Council to the list of service members.
“This demonstrates the Council commitment to safe digging practices,” Mr O’Keeffe said.
“This service is designed to protect Australians, whether you are a backyard renovator, an individual tradesman or a commercial contractor, the potential for injury, personal liability and even death does exist.
“You don’t need to be operating a large excavator. A worker digging a shallow trench as part of a minor landscaping job can cause as much damage as a multinational building company during the construction of a large civil project.
“Obtaining accurate information about your work site significantly minimises these risks.”
The service provided by Dial Before You Dig is now available through lodging a free inquiry online at www.1100.com.au, downloading DBYD’s iPhone app or ringing its national call centre on 1100.
