Earlier this week, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and state and territory leaders agreed to reclassify the seven-round lever action shotgun into the most restrictive category – category D.

That meant the ban on importing the shotgun into Australia could be lifted, but the seven-shot gun would only be available to professional shooters under certain conditions.

But state and territory leaders have to introduce legislation into their parliaments and pass it before the ban can be lifted, meaning if it fails in Queensland, it will have ramifications across the nation.

Mr Katter said he would fight the changes in Queensland's Parliament.

"Not only will we be voting against it but we'll be leading the charge and doing everything we can in our powers to stop it," Mr Katter said.

"It's political grandstanding at its worse.

"Our message to the crossbench and the opposition is, you may agree that there should be some weapons changing categories and that might be your position, and that's fine, but all we're saying is don't change something without evidence and data."

The member for Mount Isa said the move was not based on evidence or any particular incident.

"This is a decision based on a YouTube clip and some politicians have seen some advantage of picking on licensed firearms owners by picking on one weapon," Mr Katter said.

"We're happy to have the discussion (on whether a weapon should be reclassified) and perhaps that is the conclusion, but base that on evidence and data.

"At the very least it's bad government and with no consultation with anyone."

Mr Katter said the change may be popular with some people in Brisbane, but warned about how the move would play out in the regions.

"With One Nation, the last thing you want to do is to be playing around with issues around firearms," he said.

The laws could also face a hurdle in Queensland's hung parliament from the LNP.

Opposition leader Tim Nicholls said he did not take "riding orders from Canberra".

Mr Nicholls said the LNP would make a decision based on the best interests of Queenslanders and people who needed weapons to control pests and vermin.

"We don't take our riding orders from Canberra," Mr Nicholls said.

"We'll have a look at what it all means.

"It's a reasonably complex area."

Mr Nicholls said the LNP would make a decision based on discussions with "the people who are affected by it".

"If necessary we'll move a motion of disallowance in the Parliament," he said.

"We'll stick up for Queenslanders and particularly for those people who are in the agricultural sector, those people on the land."

Mr Nicholls said he had spoken to "quite a few" of his federal colleagues over the past week in relation to the issue.

"I've made it abundantly clear to them that we'll make our decision based on the best interests of Queenslanders," he said.

"We won't be railroaded into decisions and if that means we tell the federal government to bugger off, then we'll do it."

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said what former prime minister John Howard did following the Port Arthur massacre 20 years ago was right.

"Our nation is safer," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"Queenslanders deserve the same protections as every other Australian. My government will not allow our gun laws to be weakened.

"Tim Nicholls can explain why our gun laws should be weakened and why he disagrees with every other state and territory."

Ms Palaszczuk said she would not compromise the safety of the community or police.

"I can't imagine the danger if these weapons got into the wrong hands," she said.

Federal independent MP Bob Katter's son-in-law Robert Nioa - Robbie Katter's brother-in-law - planned to import 20,000 of the Turkish guns when it was previously classified under the less restrictive category A.

A temporary ban on lever-action shotguns with a magazine capacity of more than five rounds was later implemented.

Mr Nioa is one of the largest weapons importers in the nation.
