The 27-year-old admits the Raiders' success in 2016 will make his goals harder, but he's come to Canberra to "have a positive impact".

Turner played more than 200 Super League games before the Raiders lured him down under from St Helens.

He doesn't like to be "pigeon-holed" and can play in the halves, centres or second row.

Given his versatility, Stuart said Turner could be the perfect utility player off the bench, and while he just wants to be in the team for the round-one trip to Townsville to face the Cowboys, the Englishman was looking to force his way into a run-on role during the season.

"I did start off in the halves, that is my original position, but if I was needed elsewhere I can play those roles," Turner said.

"Just because I don't like to pigeon-hole myself and I like to know what everyone's role is so I'm a bit of a nosey bloke so that's probably why I can play a few different positions.

"That's my main aim for round one, is just to be in the 17, but loads of things can happen throughout the year so depending on them I would like to break into the starting team."

He could potentially fill the void on the bench left by the Achilles injury to back-up hooker Kurt Baptiste, but Turner didn't want to be drawn on the possibility.

Turner was confident Baptiste would pick up where he left off when he returned from the long-term injury.

"It's a bit disrespectful to Kurt to start talking about me going into the bench. I think I would've been there abouts if Kurt was there anyway," he said.

"I just wish him all the best with his recovery and I'm sure as soon as he comes back he'll fit straight into the team."

The Raiders were looking to improve on their 2016 resurrection, where they went within three points of making the NRL grand final.

They pushed eventual premiers Cronulla and their grand final opponents Melbourne during this year's finals series.

They're expected to be in premiership contention again next year given how young a lot of the players Stuart has assembled were.

Turner realised that success could make it hard to force his way into the Raiders line-up.

The halves pairing of Aidan Sezer and Blake Austin clicked in the second-half of the season, Joey Leilua and captain Jarrod Croker both had brilliant seasons in the centres, and second-rowers Josh Papalii and Elliott Whitehead were internationals

"It does make my job hard, but I don't think this team will be resting on last year's laurels. I think last year's gone now and this is a new group for 2017," Turner said.

"We want to go one step further. Hopefully I can add to the team, that's why I came out here. I want to have a positive impact and I'll looking to do that from round one."

Meanwhile, the Raiders have signed former St George Illawarra forward Topi Taufa on a two-year deal.
