Outside court, Mr Crawford confirmed his client would apply for bail, but declined any further comment.
Police have indicated bail will be opposed.
Minutes earlier, Magistrate Robert Walker remanded the 24-year-old in custody and ordered he reappear on Friday at 9am to make an application for bail.
He faced three rape charges, three sexual assault charges while armed and one charge of deprivation of liberty.
A second man is expected to appear in Lismore Magistrates Court this morning for an extradition hearing.
He was expected to face similar charges once he arrived in Queensland.
