The one-day series against Pakistan is the next mission after the whitewash in the Test series but Cricket Australia's planning for the tour of India is already into the advanced stage.

Smith, who addressed the players after the Sydney Test, has been big on adaptability during his reign and wants his players to have a firm grip on their game plans before they arrive in Dubai for the pre-series training camp in late January.

Australia's batsmen will be plotting ways to not just survive against India's deadly spin twins Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja but also how they will score, then practising their plan at the state-of-the-art International Cricket Council Academy.

Smith, David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Mathew Wade, who play both Test and 50-over formats, will be multi-tasking in the next three weeks – fine tuning their red-ball game while also doing their bit to ensure Australia maintain their dominance over Pakistan in the limited overs arena.

The ploy could blow up in their faces if Pakistan belie their lowly ranking and beat the world champions on home soil but Australia cannot afford to leave any stone unturned if they are to improve their woeful record in Asia, where they have lost their past nine Tests.

Khawaja said his preparation for India had already started. The left-hander in many ways personifies Australia's woes away from home. His average on the subcontinent of 19, with no half-centuries from seven innings, is a fraction of his home mark of 64.

The elegant No.3 was reduced to a mess on last year's nightmare tour of Sri Lanka, dismissed four times in the first two Tests by spin then dumped for the final game. That he was dismissed three times to off-spin will not be lost on Ashwin – the world's No.1 ranked Test bowler and a colossal force at home.

Encouragingly for Khawaja, he was able to tame the leg-spin of Yasir Shah in the series against Pakistan. His series tally against Yasir and Azhar Ali was an imposing 154 runs from 177 balls for the loss of one wicket, though Ashwin and Jadeja on India's turning tracks represent a much tougher assignment.

"I've already started doing work on it. I know the team hasn't been picked but you have to be prepared no matter what," Khawaja said.

"It's always something you have to be mindful of even when you're playing white-ball cricket."

Khawaja was coy about the exact approach he would take but said he, like many of his teammates, will be getting in plenty of practice on spin-friendly wickets as the one-day circuit winds around the country.

"The most important thing is it's about experience," Khawaja said.

"India is a tough place to play cricket, as a lot of other places are. India's probably the greatest challenge because it's most different to what we've grown up playing against.

"From experience, you practise and practise and practise but until you get out in the middle and are put under pressure and have those experiences and find your way around it, it's just not the same."

As one-sided as the series was against Pakistan, Khawaja said the touring team were not as bad as the scorecards indicated.

"We've played some really good cricket over the last four Test matches," Khawaja said. "Pakistan put up a really good fight at various stages of the Test match but we blunted them out. That kind of stuff gets lost when you look at the game as a whole – we played some really good cricket."
