The asbestos register, updated in the past week, features 526,779 separate entries for schools across the state.

The spreadsheet, updated to reflect asbestos records as at October 31, contains information about confirmed, assumed or removed asbestos in department-owned facilities, and is updated quarterly.

A search of the document reveals 33,372 instances of "confirmed" asbestos.

For example, wall sheeting in a room in A block at Brisbane Central State School was confirmed as asbestos and described as cement-based chrysotile, physical state 3 (meaning intact and stable, slight damage), BEMIR score 18, which was considered a low hazard, seek advice from competent person if disturbed. No attention was recommended.

Other entries for the school list items as assumed to be asbestos, not present (not tested), not present (tested) or removed.

It also lists the date identified and whether further action is recommended.

Opposition Education spokeswoman Tracy Davis said the government must have a long-term objective to ensure all government-controlled buildings were free of asbestos material.

Ms Davis accused the government of cutting maintenance funding by up to $20 to $25 million per year compared to spending under the LNP government.

"The safety of our students in schools and classrooms must be paramount along with education and learning," she said.

Asbestos was a popular building material before 1990 in Australia due to its durability, fire resistance and insulating properties.

Asbestos materials can include ceilings, wall sheeting, guttering, downpipes and vinyl flooring, which if in good condition, do not pose a health risk unless disturbed.

Materials are given a score within the register, from a "negligible hazard" to "needs attention" and hazardous, with the physical state also listed and the type of asbestos found after testing.

An Education and Training spokesman said the government's long-term objective was for all government-controlled buildings to be free from asbestos material.

"The department's highest priority is the health, safety and wellbeing of students and staff," the spokesman said.

He said the department was progressively removing asbestos from schools, early childhood education centres and department-owned residences based on its assessed condition.

"The department is committed to being transparent with the public about the location and removal of asbestos in its buildings," the spokesman said.

"As part of this process, the state schools asbestos register has routinely been published on DET's public website."

The spokesman said there was an awareness program for staff and the community, annual training and a planned program of asbestos audits to make sure any asbestos was safe.

"ACM [asbestos-containing material] material that is assessed as being in poor condition or is regarded as high risk is immediately made safe and scheduled for removal," he said.

"Typically most building and maintenance works in schools are scheduled during holiday periods to minimise the disruption to teaching and learning. This includes any works related to removing ACM."

The department has allocated $13 million in its 2016-17 budget for its targeted asbestos program, including $3 million for the rolling asbestos audit program and $10 million for the ongoing removal of asbestos.

Other asbestos removal is bundled into the government's maintenance and capital works program, including the four-year $300 million School Infrastructure Enhancement Program.

The register has been online since September 2009.
