As CA weighs a radical change to the structure of its selection panel, Buchanan is advocating a new system where the head coach would effectively become the head selector, charged with the responsibility of running the team.

Under the system, the role currently known as head selector would effectively become an assistant selector whose job was to "create a robust information and data system" for the coach to pick the side. The coach would also receive input from the state coaches. The head coach would sit below a team performance manager, whose job would be to oversee the entire program. The structure would also be adopted at state and youth levels in the men's and women's games.

Buchanan's initiative would mark a dramatic change from what he described as an outdated system. It would also bring cricket up to speed, Buchanan says, with sports like AFL, football and the NFL, where the coach has greater authority over team selection.

While Buchanan said he had no issue with selectors during his tenure from 1999-2007 he believes the "fewer voices, the better".

Buchanan believes if CA are to be bold they will take a "gloves are off" approach to its review, he wrote on his website.

Buchanan's model is sure to create discussion among current and former players, many of whom believe the coach's role should be to facilitate the captain.

He made a similar change during his turbulent time in New Zealand cricket with coach Mike Hesson becoming a selector and having the final say. The Black Caps have since made their first World Cup final and enjoyed one of their best runs in Test cricket.

Geeves 3 ... no, 4 – Boof nil

On the topic of coaches, the current man in the job, Darren Lehmann, has made a few headlines this week after his online stoush with former player turned columnist Brett Geeves.

There are many forthright opinion pieces by former players that don't get much traction, but Lehmann ensured one by Geeves did.

The coach did not take kindly to Geeves' allegations that he was sending out "mixed messages" over opener Matt Renshaw's Test future, saying "I don't listen to Brett – he wasn't a very good player".

Geeves, who played two one-day internationals for Australia and claimed 140 first-class wickets at 33, responded by penning another column for Fox Sports, slamming Lehmann as a "subscriber of the national hierarchical code", where a person's standing is judged by their playing record. In this code, Lehmann, as a former Test player, ranks higher than Geeves. Both are many rungs above the Tonk.

Geeves saved the best for last, recounting the pair's six head-to-head duels.

"So across the four games I got to bowl to him, I dismissed him three times," Geeves wrote. "The code was made to be broken. Anyone got bunny ears?"

The decision by Pakistan to stage the final of their domestic Twenty20 competition in Lahore has created safety concerns from the world players' union but there's at least one team prepared to go to great lengths to look after its players.

The Tonk has been told defending champions Islamabad United is considering flying players and officials from Lahore Airport to the ground.

Pakistan officials are so desperate for the final of the Pakistan Super League, which is being hosted in the UAE due to safety fears, to be held in the country they are offering $US20,000 to foreign players to take part.

Champions to reunite

Further to our report last week about a reunion of Australia's 1987 World Cup, there's also one in the pipeline for the country's victorious women's team from 1978 later this year.

The Tonk is hearing it will coincide with the Southern Stars' departure for the World Cup in England starting June.
