The film stars include John Boyega from Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens and Clint Eastwood's son, Scott Eastwood, who will pilot one of the giant robotic Jaeger mech vehicles in the film.

The robotic Jaegers are operated by two pilots connected by a "mind bridge" who fight against giant monsters emerging from ocean portals.

Boyega plays character Stacker Pentecost's son in the sequel.

The action movie, set to be released in February 2018, is a sequel to director Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim.

Pacific Rim: Uprising comes to Brisbane months after the corner of Mary and Albert streets was transformed into New York for the filming of Thor: Ragnarok.

Several streets will be closed this weekend and then again from January 21-22 for the Pacific Rim sequel.

Acting mayor Adrian Schrinner said six streets in Brisbane CBD would host the filming.

These roads will be closed:

• Eagle Street, between Charlotte St and Wharf St;
• Creek Street, between Charlotte St and Wharf St;
• Elizabeth Street, between Creek St and Eagle St;
• Queen Street, between Creek St and Adelaide St;
• Wharf Street, between Adelaide St and Queen St;
• Market Street, between Mary St and Charlotte St.

Cr Schrinner acknowledged there would be disruptions to the inner-city, but said the crew had worked with local businesses and state and local governments to minimise the impact.

"Major productions, such as Pacific Rim 2, are helping to raise our city's international profile, in addition to supporting our local industry and economy," Cr Shrinner said.

"Over the past few years Brisbane has become an increasingly popular film destination, with projects including Thor: Ragnarok, San Andreas, Unbroken and The Railway Man all hosting filming in the city."

Meanwhile Kingsford Smith Drive will be reduced to one lane from 7am on Sunday, January 15, to 5am Monday, January 16, and again from Sunday, January 22, to 5am Monday, January 23.
