The matter is now in the hands of the NRL Integrity Unit to decide what sanction, if any, Papalii should face.

NSW prop James Tamou was suspended for two games, including a State of Origin game, and fined $20,000 for a drink driving offence four years ago.

Papalii's incident came after he left Raiders captain Jarrod Croker's engagement party on Saturday night.

Stuart said there were no other players in the car with the Queensland and Australian representative, who has played six Origins and nine Tests.

The Green Machine coach said the club was disappointed with the 24-year-old's decision, but they would support the "kid with a big heart".

Papalii does a lot of community work, but after one season with the Raiders' Club 82 — the team's leadership group — Papalii has relinquished the responsibility.

Stuart said his second-rower was full of remorse for his actions.

"Josh has made a horrible choice and we are all disappointed. There has been a lot of hard work put in to where we are today, although Josh and I will work together now on getting things back on track immediately," he said.

"Josh is a good kid with a big heart and does a lot of good things for others. I'm sticking by Josh, as I would with any of my other players in the same situation. He's stood down from the Club 82."

The Raiders are one of the favourites for this season's premiership after they announced themselves in 2016.

Their style of play on their march to the NRL preliminary final last year was a breath of fresh air for the competition as they went within three points of making the grand final.

It's meant expectations for 2017 are even higher, but Papalii's incident has the potential to disrupt their season before it's even begun.

Stuart is confident that won't be the case when the Raiders open their season against the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville on March 4.

"It won't be an interruption. We got back into work today and got our heads back on for football," Stuart said.

"It hasn't disrupted anything. We're a very strong group now and we'll get through these types of situations quickly because we're a very strong group, very tight.

"We'll get through these situations now because we've jumped onto it immediately.

"I won't let this drag on. We're back to work today and we've had a really good day at training, so it hasn't disrupted anything."

The Raiders were plagued by off-field incidents before Stuart's return to the club where he was a premiership player.

NRL bad boys Todd Carney, Josh Dugan and Blake Ferguson were all moved on after alcohol-fuelled incidents.

It looked like the Raiders had put it all behind them, with Stuart building a strong culture in conjunction with Croker and veteran Sia Soliola.

Stuart said mistakes were just a fact of life and he'd be "stupid" to say this would be the last incident.

"It's what happens in everyday life. People make poor choices. To say that it's going to be the last incident, I'd be stupid," he said.

"You've just got to be mindful of what your position is and you've got to be mindful the decisions you make affect the team.

"You've got to be all about making the right choices for your team."
