Queensland recorded the largest decrease in the nation in December – down 13,700 people – in seasonally adjusted terms.

Over the past year, Queensland employment decreased by 30,900.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 6 per cent in November to 6.2 per cent in December.

The trend unemployment rate remained steady at 6 per cent.

To the people who lost their jobs last month, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said: "My government is 100 per cent committed to working with you and finding you a job."

"This year is a year for work, cabinet will be working, but our main priority is getting people back into work," she said.

"I want to reassure everyone that we are 100 per cent committed to ensuring that people are getting work in this state."

Ms Palaszczuk put the increase down to fluctuations.

"These figures will fluctuate, there hasn't been much of a fluctuation this time from the end of last year," she said.

Ms Palaszczuk said the government had job-creating programs, such as the $200 million Works for Queensland package.

"I'd like to see an unemployment rate with a five in [front of] it, and that is exactly what my government is aiming towards," she said.

Acting Treasurer Bill Byrne said it was reassuring to see Queensland's trend unemployment rate steady at 6 per cent.

"This is a good outcome in the current economic climate with 28,400 jobs created in Queensland since the election," Mr Byrne said.

Mr Byrne said as a minister from regional Queensland, he wanted to recognise Ms Palaszczuk for her understanding of the economic challenges some regions faced, especially in creating jobs.

Shadow Treasurer Scott Emerson said unemployment in Queensland was rising despite a fall in the participation rate and tens of thousands of people giving up looking for work.

"Last year will go down as a disastrous year for Queensland job seekers, capped off by 13,700 job losses in December," Mr Emerson said.

"The situation in Queensland is dire."
