Mayor Joyce McCulloch said the appointment comes after an extensive nationwide recruitment process to attract an executive with a new and innovative style of leadership in line with the vision for economic development in Mount Isa and Kitzelmann was a clear choice for the position.
“Michael comes to this role with a tremendous depth of experience in management, leadership and innovation,” Cr McCulloch said.
“His extensive experience in commercial and government roles will drive this council towards exploring new opportunities and strengthening Council’s position as the major economic hub of the North West.”
Cr McCulloch said Mount Isa councillors sought a CEO who could lead through the next era of change and growth.
“As a new Council team, we’re moving in a new direction motivated through innovation, diversification, and a prosperous economic future,” Cr McCulloch said.
Cr McCulloch said Mr Kitzelmann would play a critical role in ensuring the organisation mobilises to deliver on the Council team’s new vision.
“We believe Michael is capable of driving this council towards exploring new opportunities and strengthening Council’s position as the major economic hub of the North West.”
Mr Kitzelmann comes to the role more than 25 years’ experience in local government including senior leadership positions at CEO level.
He was appointed CEO at Etheridge Shire in 2014.
Mr Kitzelmann said he was looking forward to the challenge of leading an organisation with the brief of encouraging economic development.
“I am looking forward to leading Mount Isa Council on its journey to establish itself as a major economic hub for the North West, and strengthening our position towards a positive and very prosperous future,” he said.
Mr Kitzelmann brings his wife and two young children to Mount Isa.
