Almost one month ago, Megan Anderson became the first Australian fighter to hold a title in a major international MMA organisation with a blistering second-round knockout of Charmaine Tweet to claim the Invicta interim featherweight title vacated by Cris Cyborg.

It has been a long, lonely road to the top for Anderson, who compiled an Australian record of 5-1 before making a snap decision to leave her friends and family in the Gold Coast behind, moving to Kansas City to train under UFC lightweight James Krause at Glory MMA.

The change came after she was picked up by Invicta, the world's premier women's MMA organisation, and subsequently submitted by Cindy Dandois.

Anderson said the decision to leave was one of the hardest decisions she had ever made, but a decision she believed more Australian fighters should make.

"The company I'm managed by, one of their partners co-owns Glory MMA in Kansas City with James Krause, who is in the UFC and is now my coach," she said.

"I was planning on staying for two weeks to train afterwards and after a week they said if I wanted to, I could live and train there full-time and I just said OK.

"Three years down the track, I probably would have kicked myself if I didn't take the opportunity while it was there.

"I came over here not intending to stay, and then all of a sudden I'm staying and I wasn't able to say goodbye to my family or my friends.

"I didn't have any clothes, so I had to kind of buy everything over here or get what I could shipped over… it was a tough decision but it was a decision my family supported me on because they knew I had to do this to take the next step forward.

"There are levels to MMA and Australia is still so young in the sport… the training just isn't as good as it is here, not for me at least."

A powerful striker standing at six foot, Anderson won her next three fights by knockout, before taking on Tweet to become the first Australian fighter, regardless of gender, to claim a major belt.

Now, with the UFC seemingly looking to establish a women's 145-pound division with a title fight between Holm and De Randamie, Anderson has her eyes locked on the biggest MMA promotion in the world.

Invicta Fighting Championships is considered a breeding ground for the UFC, with the vast majority of the promotion's strawweight fighters having cut their teeth under Invicta promoter Shannon Knapp.

For now, Anderson is waiting upon a call from the UFC and plotting her next move in the belief that a UFC title shot is in her neat future.

"I'm one of the top featherweights in the world and if I'm not picked up I guess they're really not interested in the division, so I hope they approach us in the next few weeks and we can get the ball rolling.

"I don't really know a lot about Germaine, I know she has good striking, but I'm a Holly fan, I'm always going to go with Holly, even though now I could be potentially fighting her, it's weird.

"The date of that fight is my birthday as well…it's a nice coincidence that the women's featherweight belt is going to be created on my birthday.  It's a bit weird."

Weirdness aside, Anderson continues to work hard on her game under Krause, and said that anyone who thinks she is simply a stand-up fighter is for a rude awakening.

"I took down Tweet, so you can see my game is evolving, I'm not a one-dimensional fighter.

"That was the first takedown I've ever gone for in a fight, and I can guarantee that the Megan Anderson of today would steamroll Cindy Dandois, but I've got my eyes firmly on the UFC."

For the growing popularity of women's MMA, there is a hardcore group of fans who would still seek to deny women their place in the line-up.

For those fans, Anderson has a simple message.

"Yeah, those guys need to get over themselves.

"Women's MMA is growing more than it ever has, and we're not going anywhere, just get over it and watch some really good fights."
