The accident happened around 3pm on Sunday afternoon though the cause is not yet known.
A single QR locomotive engine has been overturned and remains on its side on the railtracks near the Irish Club.
Staff at the nearby Happy Valley store said they didn’t hear anything but another nearby witness said he was at home when he heard a loud thump near the Parkside Apartments around 3pm and then the fire brigade arrived shortly later.
Police have put in place diversions because diesel is leaking from the engine.
It’s not known yet whether anyone was injured in the accident.
Emergency crews, QR, Aurizon and other staff are on site.
