With rail infrastructure being a key for economic activity in north west Queensland, the rail network is a transport backbone for many regional communities across the state.

Phillip Strachan voiced his support of maintenance for the Isa to Townsville line after being asked what he was doing for western Queensland.

“The Mount Isa line not only provided a crucial link between local communities and the Port of Townsville, it also supported the mining and livestock industries and general freight transportation,” Mr Strachan said.

“I am keen for Queensland Rail to continue its efforts to improve and maintain the reliability of the Mount Isa line, which includes an investment of approximately $58 million this financial year.”

Mr Strachan said there were several projects underway to support Queensland Rail’s ongoing commitment to improve rail infrastructure in the region.

“The current project to replace 51 kilometres of steel sleepers on the Mount Isa line. This $25 million investment is supporting 75 regional jobs and will enhance safety and reliability, while greatly reducing the future maintenance needs of the track.

“Over the next two years, $11.6 million will be invested to replace culverts on the Phosphate Hill branch line, and a further $4.5 million investment to upgrade eight level crossings on the Mount Isa line to improve safety.

“A $1.24 million project to install additional trackside monitoring systems will also help enhance safe use of the track by the freight and passenger trains.”
