An annual report into child deaths in Queensland found 46 children known to the system died in 2015-16, down from 51 the previous year.

Among those, medical conditions and disease were in the majority.

Four of the children who died of fatal assault or neglect were known to the Child Protection system in the 12 months prior to the death.

Overall, the Queensland Family and Child Commission reported on 390 deaths, down from 445 the previous year.

The commission reports on all registered deaths of children in Queensland.

Three-quarters of the deaths (291) were caused by either disease or medical conditions contracted before or after birth, with infants accounting for 73 per cent of those deaths.

Three children died from diseases potentially preventable by vaccines.

Road accidents accounted for 18 deaths, eight Queensland children drowned and 29 died from Sudden Unexpected Deaths in Infancy and SIDS.

In 2015-16, 20 children died of suicide and nine from fatal assault or neglect.

Queensland Family and Child Commission commissioner Cheryl Vardon said the organisation was researching the deaths of young people by suicide.

Ms Vardon said people needed to be educated to recognise the signs.

"If I could say one thing, it would be to keep an eye on young people and children, work out whether they're feeling anxious about their futures.

"If you feel your teenager or child is struggling, get help early, and those warning signs might be very subtle.

"Changes in behaviour, sleeping and eating patterns and so forth."

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the death of any child under any circumstance was a tragedy.

"For a government to ever suggest to parents who lose a child that enough had been done to protect or save them would rightly be condemned as utterly offensive," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"Reducing all child deaths even further requires action by departments and agencies right across government.

"It's why we've taken measures like allowing childcare centres to exclude unvaccinated children."

The government released three child safety reports on Monday - the Queensland Family and Child Commission annual report, a QFCC report into information sharing and the Queensland Child Death Case Review Panel annual report.

The information sharing report came after the When a Child Is Missing report - commissioned after the disappearance of Tiahleigh Palmer - which recommended a further review into information sharing.

The government supports all 17 recommendations, which include improving the visibility of home-based childcare services and monitoring of family day care services, developing a register and regulatory approval of home-based services and authorising with police to share information with relevant agencies.

Ms Palaszczuk said the government would also invest $6 million to upgrade IT systems to allow for faster information-sharing between agencies for missing children.

The Queensland Child Death Case Review Panel held 66 reviews during 2015-16, considering the cases of 59 children who died and seven children who sustained serious injuries who were known to the Department of Child Safety between August 2014 and December 2015.

The leading causes of death among cases considered by panels were suicide and disease or other medical conditions.

Child Safety Minister Shannon Fentiman said the death of any child was a tragedy.

"I want to convey my sincere condolences to the families of these children," she said.

"We owe it to all the families that experience such tragedy to ask hard questions to ensure we are learning everything we can to prevent such tragedies in the future."

Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls said a new IT system would not fix the problems in the Child Safety department.

Opposition Child Safety spokeswoman Ros Bates said 46 children dying was "46 too many".
