The ckub hosted an afternoon tea at the Terrace Gardens to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Lions International and the first anniversary of the refounding of the Mount Isa club.
Leichhardt Lions president Liza Dowler said the event attracted 57 guests and they signed on two new members on the day.
“A lot of people didn’t realise how much we do in the community,” Ms Dowler said.
Ms Dowler gave a speech where she outlined the achievements of the club in the last 12 months.
“In 2016 we raised money for Saxon Park who had a life changing motorcycle accident where he is now confined to a wheelchair for mobility,” she said.
“We also supported the Setiwan family whose young mother Lyca unfortunately lost her battle with a brian tumour.”
The club also supported the Hann Family after Christine Hann died of a brain tumour, the Lovelock family for son Kael’s fight against leukaemia and the Blue Dragon Childrens’s Foundation, a volunteer organisation helping Vietnam’s poorest children escape poverty.
Ms Dowler said they also supported Lions Foundation projects such as Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, Lions Medical Research Foundation, Lions Recycle for Sight Australia and Lions Project Stinger Research Foundation.
She also noted a brand new barbecue trailer which was gleaming in the Terrace Garden car park as visitors arrived.
“You may have notice our newly furnished barbecue trailer which enables us to be more active in the community,” she said.
“This will be used as a fundraising tool and to support our local groups.”
Ms Dowler thanked sponsors Cava Hydraulics, Sheet Metal, Reece, Beaurepaires and Mount Isa Signs and the build team Peter Roberts, Robert West and Neill Carlsen.
