One in particular that had Queensland University of Technology academic Clive Bean scratching his head was the renaming of Brisbane Central to McConnel, after the founder of Queensland's first children's hospital, Mary McConnel.

"Why they had to change the name of a central city seat like that, I'm not quite sure," Professor Bean said.

"Perhaps they just felt that the boundaries had changed sufficiently and it wasn't quite the seat it used to be.

"...There is quite a bit to be said for seats that say a lot about where they are and what they are by the name.

"Clearly one that says 'Brisbane Central' tells you pretty much what it is, whereas one that says 'McConnel' doesn't."

But Professor Bean said he could see the merit in most of the name changes.

"That's clearly to signal that they feel there are very significant changes in the seat and keeping the name Indooroopilly, for example, doesn't quite do justice to what the new seat is and could actually be a bit confusing," he said.

"Perhaps they could have been a little less liberal about that. It may have helped with the sense that there's a fair bit of change."

Professor Bean said the redistribution of Queensland's electoral boundaries, forced by the addition of four new seats in the state's Parliament, was about as even-handed as could have been hoped for.

He said criticism from some quarters of the Electoral Commission of Queensland's draft redistribution was unfounded.

"It has to be kept in mind that changes that have disadvantaged particular individuals and, by extension, political parties are just part of the fallout, rather than any particular plan," Professor Bean said.

"That was always going to be the case somewhere along the line with a shake-up this big.

"It's basically adding four new seats that have to be squeezed in and there's going to be these effects."

Professor Bean took particular exception to comments from Katter's Australian Party MP for Dalrymple, Shane Knuth, whose north Queensland regional seat was set to be abolished.

Mr Knuth cried foul on Thursday, after the new boundaries were leaked, saying it was designed to get "rid of" minor parties.

Mr Knuth was an advocate of increasing the number of seats in the Queensland Parliament and the legislation enabling the expansion passed with his support.

"Be careful what you wish for, because it may come back to bite you," Professor Bean said.

"It's also an example of the major parties combining with the minor parties to get what they want, but then the gloves will come off after that."

Professor Bean said the overall outcome had been "fairly balanced" for both the major parties and pointed out that, for about 70 electorates, there had been minimal or no change.

That, he said, should keep the reactions in perspective.

"I imagine it's exactly what the LNP would have wanted and lobbied for, but I don't think it's the reason that seat (Dalrymple) was abolished.

"Commissions like this one are uncompromisingly committed to being fair, non-judgmental and non-political.

"They would have made that decision knowing it would have fallout, but feeling it was the decision they had to make."

Professor Bean said there had been "a lot of shock and horror" about the extent of the changes, but that should always have been expected.

"If you think about having to add four brand new electorates to 89, there was always going to have to be major flow-on effects," he said.

"It's actually, with hindsight, not surprising.

"...I know Shane Knuth is crying foul, saying this is part of a plot to get rid of minor parties, but actually I think it's just part of the effect of having to add new seats and the flow-on effects from that, when you've got to keep the numbers relatively equal."
