Parts of Labor-held Mount Coot-tha and LNP-held Indooroopilly will form the western Brisbane suburbs electorate of Maiwar, the Aboriginal name for the Brisbane River.

Labor member for Mount Coot-tha Steven Miles' electorate will disappear under the Electoral Commission of Queensland's proposal, with LNP MP Scott Emerson's renamed electorate adding in the suburbs of Mount Coot-tha, Toowong, Bardon and Auchenflower.

The redefined electorate will lose Chelmer, Graceville, Sherwood, Tennyson and Corinda to the electorate of Miller (previously known as the electorate of Yeerongpilly, held by Labor's Mark Bailey).

Fairfax Media analysed the primary votes in the booths located within the Maiwar electorate at the January 2015 state election.

The LNP received 9704 primary votes in the voting booths within the Maiwar boundaries, Labor 5936 and the Greens 4200.

Renowned ABC election analyst Antony Green said, based on the redistribution, Maiwar was a nominally LNP electorate with a 3.1 per cent margin.

The LNP's Scott Emerson held Indooroopilly with a two-party preferred margin of 6.7 per cent, while Environment Minister Steven Miles held Mount Coot-tha by 2.6 per cent.

It all pointed towards a potentially close result come election day, something the LNP seemed to concede on Friday when Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls and Indooroopilly MP Scott Emerson campaigned in Maiwar.

"The Queensland Parliament needs people like Scott Emerson," Mr Nicholls said.

"Hard-working, people who know their local community, people who can actually make a difference."

Mr Emerson said he would contest Maiwar and was "in it to try to win it", but would not take it for granted.

"I don't know who's going to be running against me, but I'm determined to deliver for the new seat as much as I've been delivering for the current seat," he said.

Comment was sought from Dr Miles, who had not publicly declared whether he would contest Maiwar.

For Mr Emerson, at least, there was an acknowledgement that he was in for a battle to retain his seat in the Queensland Parliament.

"Labor held this seat for three elections before I came in in 2009," he said, speaking of Labor-cum-Greens MP Ronan Lee, who held Indooroopilly from 2001 to 2009.

"So I'm taking nothing for granted, but I'm determined – like all of the team under Tim and (deputy leader) Deb (Frecklington) – to work as hard as possible to get rid of the Palaszczuk Labor government."

Queensland University of Technology political scientist Clive Bean said he expected Maiwar to "play into the hands" of the LNP, rather than Labor.

"It's really more Indooroopilly than it is Mount Coot-tha," he said.
