The Stars were humbled with the bat in losing the final two Twenty20 matches against the White Ferns in Australia, and have been firmly put under the spotlight by Mott in the best-of-three Rose Bowl series in New Zealand, beginning at Eden Park.

"To me, for the batting group, it's about ownership and really taking accountability to see the innings through," Mott said on Saturday.

"I think too many people threw their wickets away in the T20. Admittedly, it's a different format – ODIs give you more time to set your plans up and bat a little bit longer.

"We talk a lot about match-winning contributions. Certainly from our batting group, we are looking for some hundreds and match-winning not outs."

The Stars could muster only 9-61 in Geelong last weekend and 66 in Adelaide on Wednesday – their lowest Twenty20 score.

Experienced batter Rachael Haynes has been added to the squad and is in line to play, while much will again depend on skipper Meg Lanning.

"I think our bowlers did the job, bowled New Zealand out for about 100 three times in a row," Mott said.

"The area that clearly needs to be fixed is the batting unit. They are under pressure to perform. Having someone like Rachael Haynes around adds that little bit of pressure on the unit. There are a few players there that know they need some scores."

Match-winning all-rounder Ellyse Perry has rejoined the squad after a hamstring injury but Mott indicated she would not play until game two. He said the Stars would "err on the side of caution" with vice-captain Alex Blackwell, who also has a strained hamstring.

Mott said the Stars would welcome the return of veteran batter Nicole Bolton, who finished off the Women's Big Bash League strongly with the Perth Scorchers.

"She is a quality player and she adds a lot of stability to the top there. She puts a high price on her wicket. She has evolved a lot in the last couple of years in terms of her strike rate as well," Mott said.

"She is a good one to have back – a good, solid influence, good around the group. Both her and, obviously, Ellyse Perry hopefully coming back for game two will add a lot of the batting unit."

Mott said veteran leg-spinner Kristen Beams and emerging leggie Amanda-Jade Wellington, the latter took a wicket with her first ball for Australia in December, would be a fine pairing.

"I think Beamsy enjoys it, to see someone young that she can come along and mentor," he said.

"They are vastly different in what they bring to the table. They will work well in combination. I think they will bowl a lot of overs together through this series and into the future."

What the Stars are keen to show immediately is that they remain the world's premier side.

"It's a really big game for us to just put our marker out there and reassert that we are the best team in the world," he said.

"We know we have got some work to do but [Sunday] is the first chance to put that back on track."
