Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the payment on Sunday, telling reporters she hoped it would encourage people to consider becoming foster carers.

Queensland has about 5000 foster and kinship carers.

Foster care and kinship families will each receive an additional $2000 from July to help cover basic household costs, Ms Palaszczuk said.

"This is the first time the Queensland Government has committed to helping pay the out-of-pocket costs involved with childcare for our children in foster and kinship care," she said.

Child Safety Minister Shannon Fentiman said carers had raised the issue with her.

"What they have been telling me is that the cost of childcare is not only a strain on them, but it is also a barrier that prevents more people from opening their homes," she said.

"By contributing up to $2000 per year towards out-of-pocket childcare expenses we hope more working families will come on board to help give our vulnerable kids the bright future they deserve."

Foster Care Queensland Executive Director Bryan Smith said the $2000 was "great news" for foster and kinship carers.

"We have been lobbying for this for many, many years," he said.

"Covering some of the out-of-pocket childcare costs will ease the pressure on our foster and kinship carers."

The Queensland Opposition said the $15 million instead should go towards employing more child-safety officers, rather than to foster families.

Shadow Child Safety minster Ros Bates said figures released in September 2016 showed more than 1300 foster families had left the child-safety network.

"This announcement today is not going to help the frontline safety officers," Ms Bates said.

She said rather than the money should go towards additional childcare officers.

"$15 million would go a long way to employing frontline child-safety officers into the system," Ms Bates said.

Ms Bates said foster carers were leaving the foster-care arrangements "in droves" and that their figures showed 1300 foster carers had "left the system."

She said the $15 million was not new money, but came from the $406 million that Campbell Newman's Liberal National Party government put in place after former chief magistrate Tim Carmody finished a well-received inquiry into Queensland's childcare network.
