The clean-up of the truck's load, identified as builder's waste, stretched well into the afternoon, with one of the two previously closed lanes reopening about 3.30pm.

A police spokeswoman said the freeway and tunnel should be clear and fully open by 4pm.

However, the Australian Traffic Network said traffic delays remained about two kilometres back down the freeway as the clean-up neared completion.

Delays stretched back down Milton Road in Milton and Frederick Street in Bardon.

Only one lane on the Western Freeway at Mount Coot-tha remains open and the Legacy Way tunnel is still closed after a truck fire on Monday morning.

The Queensland Fire Service was called about 9.45am and crews removed the load from the truck and extinguished the fire just before 11am.

The smouldering remains of the truck's load were left on the side of the freeway, with a lengthy cleanup expected.

There was heavy smoke rising from the scene, with three police units managing traffic flow through the area.

Two lanes of the Western Freeway southbound remained closed at 11am as well as the Legacy Way tunnel, however police were hoping to reopen the tunnel soon.

Traffic delays remained about two kilometres back down the freeway to Toowong and no one was injured by the fire.

Police were asking motorists to avoid the area.
