Dr Miles' seat of Mount Coot-tha was effectively abolished in the Queensland Redistribution Commission's proposal released last week.

He said he was "gutted" when he found out his seat of Mount Coot-tha would be scrapped.

"I've spent the weekend talking to my family, to my supporters, and today talking to branch members in Murrumba," he said.

Dr Miles said he went to school at Bald Hills and first ran for office in Division 8 of the Pine Rivers Shire Council.

"I know this area, it's not where my family are now, we are obviously well-embedded where we are, however, the option to run in Mount Coot-tha was not there," he said.

Dr Miles said it was not an acknowledgement that he could not win against LNP member for Indooroopilly Scott Emerson.

"This is an acknowledgement that Maiwar is not the seat I live in, it's not the community I'm close to," he said.

"I think 'Mar-way' or 'Mar-wah' or however we all agree to pronounce it, I think it's totally winnable for Labor, we will have a great candidate there."

Last week, Mr Emerson pronounced it "May-wah", which appears to be correct. Maiwar is a traditional Indigenous name for the Brisbane River.

Dr Miles said until the election he would remain the member for Mount Coot-tha and would represent his constituents.

Ms Palaszczuk said Labor had ensured its 42 sitting MPs had seats to contest at the next state election.

There are name changes for several MPs but their electorates remain largely the same, such has Kate Jones (Ashgrove to Cooper).

The Premier has also contacted the Labor state secretary Evan Moorhead and asked him to open nominations for a further six seats - Cook, Cairns, Jordan, Macalister, Mansfield and Mount Ommaney.

Preselections should be finished for all 48 seats by the end of April.

EARLIER: Environment Minister Steven Miles hopes to run in the seat of Murrumba at the next state election.

Dr Miles, whose seat of Mount Coot-tha was effectively abolished under the Queensland Redistribution Commission's proposal last week, was calling branch members in Murrumba to ask for their support on Monday morning.

Labor member for Murrumba Chris Whiting will run in the newly created seat of Bancroft, to its north, instead.

Bancroft was created from parts of Murrumba and includes booming areas such as North Lakes and also Deception Bay.

Mr Whiting said he was excited to run in Bancroft but was disappointed to lose parts of his electorate "because I have really enjoyed the honour of being their advocate".

Dr Miles grew up at Petrie, which is just outside the boundaries of Murrumba, to the west.

Mr Whiting, the chief government whip, has held the seat of Murrumba since 2015, while Dr Miles has been the member for Mount Coot-tha since 2015.

At the weekend, Dr Miles said he was yet to decide where he wanted to stand, but he would not try to seek pre-selection against a sitting Labor MP in a new seat.

"No, the point here is that we are all committed to re-electing the Palaszczuk Labor government," he said on Saturday.

The Labor caucus is due to discuss the issue on Monday.

The seat of Mount Coot-tha was merged with LNP MP Scott Emerson's electorate of Indooroopilly, and renamed Maiwar, leaving Mr Miles without a seat.

Mr Emeron has already committed to standing in Maiwar and he would likely have presented tough competition for Mr Miles.

Queensland Greens convenor Andrew Bartlett said their candidate for Mount Coot-tha, Michael Berkman, was committed to run for preselection in the newly created seat of Maiwar.

"Steven Miles abandoning his electorate can only help the Greens win this seat from the LNP," Mr Bartlett said.

Mr Emerson said Dr Miles would be "miles away" from his old seat at the next state election.

"People are very disappointed about that," he said.

"He will be nowhere to be seen at the state election."

When asked if none of the LNP's MPs would run in other seats, Mr Emerson said: "The LNP doesn't cut and run."

Mr Emerson said the Greens had a strong vote in the seat of Indooroopilly in the past three elections, but his job was to convince the voters of Maiwar that he was the best person to represent them.

The redistribution is the biggest shake-up of Queensland electorates in three decades and will create four new seats, taking the Parliament from 89 to 93 members.

The next state election could be held as late as May 2018, but is widely expected to be held in the second half of 2017.
