Gidgee Healing CEO Dallas Leon and YPA General Manager Alvin Hava are both excited at the prospect of the collaboration which will aim to deliver education, promotion and awareness by highlighting the importance of improving health for individuals and their families by eating good tucker, exercising regularly and less tobacco.
Deadly Choices Regional Manager, Daniella Solakovic and Youth Empowering Strength and Shelter Senior Program Manager, Debra Woodward see the Deadly Choices Education Program is an instrumental step in Closing the Gap between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians.
“What is alarming is some of the statistics around indigenous health, including that of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are two and a half times more likely than Non-Indigenous Australians to be diagnosed with a Chronic Disease” Daniella said.
The Deadly Choices Education Program will deliver interactive and engaging workshops to young people that YPA services work intensively with, as a large proportion of these youths have family members who are affected with health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, mental health and substance misuse.
The 8 week program, will be delivered to YPA participants throughout February and March period in 2017, cover leadership, chronic disease, healthy relationships, and the importance of accessing local primary health care services.
All program participants will be supported to obtain a full Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Check prior to the programs completion.
