The remuneration package agreed upon by the league and the AFL Players Association last  November allowed for nine hours a week of engagement between coaches and players, in addition to a match each round and the travel associated with away fixtures.

Those nine hours, none of which are permitted to be undertaken between 9am and 5.30pm, include all training, club gym work and conditioning, and video review and preview sessions.

The AFL is likely to keep the time cap at nine hours for 2018, although the league will review its inaugural women's season after its conclusion in March and has left the door open to making changes to the contact-hour limit should they deem it necessary.

Schmidt said the time he and his coaches were allowed to spend with the players  wasn't enough to mould an elite sports team.

"It's been quite tough to have that time management because you're trying to get the girls up to speed to be elite sportspeople and a lot of them haven't actually played elite sports before," he said.

"You need a lot of education. Even just the gym, a lot of them haven't done too much gym work before so a lot of it was just working on techniques and things like that, making sure they understood the correct technique so they don't get injured.

"You've got your fitness base as well to try and get them up to the speed of the game. They're high intense for 60 minutes of football, which is something a lot of them haven't experienced as well.

"Then they're trying to learn your game plan. You've got your reviews, you've got injury management, you've got all this other stuff, it is really difficult.

"It's definitely something that I would like to see the AFL look at. If that means that the player payments have to increase a little bit, then hopefully that's manageable," Schmidt said.

The nine hours  a week adds up to 144 over the 16-week period in which AFL Women's players are contracted, a time cap that was introduced so as not to impact on the players' working hours in other paid employment.

Player payments are even across each club. Marquee players receive a $27,000 financial package for season 2017 which includes $10,000 for their marketing and ambassadorial responsibilities. That will rise to $27,946 in 2018.

Priority players are paid $12,000 ($12,846 next year) and other listed athletes receive $8500 ($9276 in 2018).

AFLW players also receive income protection insurance against injury that forces them to miss work, such as Giants pocket rocket Mai Nguyen who ruptured the ACL in her left knee in the loss to Brisbane on the weekend, ending her season.

"It's devastating not only for us as a playing group but for her as well," Schmidt said.

"She had a couple of weeks missed in the first part of the season but she was actually really starting to find her best form again. The way she started on the weekend, a couple of fantastic intercept marks which were trademark Mai, she's the type of character that will come back bigger and better.

"Us coaches had a really good look at it [the Brisbane loss] yesterday. We showed it to the playing group and had a really good review last night, it wasn't too long, just the point that we really wanted to put across.

"It's like anything, everyone has bad days. It's how we respond to it and how we respond on Friday night."

The Giants play Melbourne at Blacktown International Sportspark on Friday evening as a curtain-raiser to the JLT Community Series  clash between GWS and the Sydney Swans.
