The Tigers clinched their first finals berth in the Cricket ACT first grade two-day competition since 1992-93 in remarkable fashion against Queanbeyan at Kippax Oval.

The two sides had two hours to get a result in the shootout for fourth place, and it was 10 minutes more than Ginninderra needed as Jak Willcox (11 not out) and Moeen Cheema (3 not out) steered the Tigers to a two-wicket win.

It was fitting Willcox found himself in the middle when the Tigers booked a finals ticket for the first time in 24 years - his father and uncle were in Ginninderra's Douglas Cup-winning squad of 1992-93.

While he wasn't alive for that premiership win, Willcox remembers spending countless Saturdays as a kid cheering on his dad Dave and uncle Andy - two of the club's all-time leading wicket takers.

"I've been around the club since I was born," Willcox said, "still shaking" after the "surreal" finish.

"Mum would bring me down to the cricket. Even before I could walk mate, I'd chuck down here on a blanket watching my uncle and my dad run around.

"It was sort of how I was brought up, every Saturday to come out and watch them play. It was more just a thing that we did every weekend, and it was fantastic."

Needing only a draw to progress, Ginninderra players were still uneasy about the Saturday morning after finishing day one at 5-84, needing a further 85 runs for victory.

In the back of their minds was the ANU-Eastlake clash across town. If Eastlake won outright and Ginninderra didn't play, the drought would have continued.

But on they went at 5pm, with Queanbeyan given two hours to take five wickets and the hosts needing 85 runs.

Willcox came to the crease with 34 runs required after the last of the recognised Ginninderra batsman Mick Delaney (49) was knocked over.

When Luke Ryan was caught for 26, the Tigers needed a further 18 with two wickets in hand - however Nicholas Owen had previously retired hurt.

So it was a good thing Willcox got to speak with his uncle Andy during the day to settle the nerves.

"I was lucky enough to have a chat to him today when he came down here just about the pressure and stuff," Willcox said.

"We had a laugh about it and everything. It's just good to have the family and the Tiger community back in the finals."

Tuggeranong clinched the minor premiership with no play on day two, with Weston Creek Molonglo and Wests-UC rounding out the top four.
